It is one aspect to create a piece for the soul to relate to, but in the same breath, there are those works which entrance the mind, deconstruct it and within its naked being, cause it to yearn and question its very being. For the art which is crafted now becomes the focal point, unto that which the mind infuses itself, and within such union, a journey made in sound is undertaken.

Drenched in a macabre yet visceral aura, “Dødsdømt” by “Ulvehyrde” can be viewed as a work of art that ushers the consciousness into its architecture, and upon entering, the mind is bewitched by its splendor. Taking the clay of Black Metal and from its essence, Ulvehyrde sculpts a grimoire for which malevolence is poured into each note.

Ulvehyrde

Tracks such as”Jammerdalen” and “Barnedrap” demonstrate a rather primordial tone to the strings and percussion, in that the motion they converge and fuse into one another evokes a ceremonial candor, a trait which spreads unto the rest of the album. A feverish essence is exhibited within the album, be it the speech of the instrumental components in the very tempo they adopt or the vocals that feel as though the hymns originate from an archaic entity. However, this atmosphere fashioned renders unto the senses an organic sensation, as though smoke fills the nostrils, and from the scent the body convulses in ecstasy, so too does the energy of “Dødsdømt” evoke. The crux of the album comes forth in its worship-like ambience, as though the liturgy woven in these melodies pays reveries to an ancient spirit, for what is experienced becomes not just a cacophony but instead an ode to an ancestral plane sculpted through an aural soundscape.

Ulvehyrde’s “Dødsdømt” becomes a psalm woven from archaic spirit shaped from the pulsating ichor of Black Metal to imbue the mind with a tangible experience through which the resonance is felt by the soul.
