When new artists and bands approach and share their music, curiously awaiting the listener’s reaction and subsequent critique, it’s difficult for me not to feel a certain skepticism and even doubt as to whether there’sactually any quality in the music presented. However, my curiosity and gratitude for being allowed to give my opinion on these matters far outweigh the “what will happen?” that undoubtedly floods my thoughts at first.

Today I’m here to present this review-commentary of the latest full-length album from the Lithuanian band Sisyphean, titled “Divergence.” I had no prior knowledge of this band, but despite this, I decided to wait until the album’s release (and until inspiration struck again) to dedicate the necessary listening and concentration to form a proper opinion.

“Divergence” presents a fairly cohesive and powerful amalgamation of Black Metal with some hints of Death Metal and atmospheric and dissonant touches that stand out quite a bit at certain points in the album, being quite prominent characteristics throughout all the songs. Sisyphean’s approach with “Divergence” is clear and concise, attacking furiously with thunderous riffs and a very powerful rhythm section that, for me, was one of the most outstanding aspects of the instrumental execution. Songs like “Stupor Mundi,” “Occultation,” and “In Divergence” stood out enormously during the six listens I gave this album due to their immense quality and presentation of the aforementioned aspects.

The vocal delivery definitely captures the lyrical concepts the band explores, with metaphysics and the futility of human existence being the themes I was able to discern after following each song’s lyrics. The screams emanate indifference and an absolute nihilism that fits perfectly with (especially) the dissonances crafted throughout the record.

Sisyphean have released a true statement of intent that puts this band on the radar of great promise for modern Extreme Metal. They are definitely on the right track, and I look forward to seeing their Evolution from here to the coming years; highly recommended album.
