Archgoat – Nightbringer, Lightbringer

Record Label: Debemur Morti Productions

Year: 2026

Rating: 9/10

Within the darkest nether-regions of the World of Black Metal, past the Underground and into Hellish places where only Devil Worshippers, War Mongers and Blasphemers dare, you’ll discover the malevolent Archgoat. Since 1989 Archgoat has been the scourge of Christianity. They have been orgiastic, sinful perverts and savage brutes regarding recording DM-inspired Black Metal of the most diabolical sort. And what you got at the beginning, as far as style/thematics, is exactly what you get now. Archgoat have been nothing if not loyal to their craft and to the Hordes, with music that has never strayed into unfitting stylistic territories. Now, a new curse is upon us and the promise of all new chapters of Suomi brutality is to be fulfilled. On September 11, the mighty Archgoat will release “Nightbringer, Lightbringer” via Debemur Morti Productions.

Archgoat

It wouldn’t be Archgoat without a bone-chilling intro – “Invocation 666” – ritualistic summoning of Satan as wrought through deep Daemonic vocals to draw us into the titular track – a relentlessly tempo’d composition that hits with all those familiar, devastating blasts and filthy Punk/Grind riffs. The overall mood? Mystification under the spell of fucking Archgoat being in the zone and doing what they do best, what they’ve always done, but with even smarter compositions – varying influences so wisely seamed together and crisply realized with appropriate production/mixing: not too clean but a little haphazard all the same.

The dual vocal attack is as bastardized as ever and the atmosphere is oppressive. There are keyboard parts here and there, but it’s the sheer weight of tonality that brutalizes here. “Blood of Jesus Spilling Upon the Earth” – the kind of slow repugnant shit that has been of inspiration to bands like Profanatica and Incantation; taking us, dragging us ever-deeper into what’s begun to literally turn my innards. Stomach in knots because of “The Stygian Millenium”, but in a good way, like how your stomach gets upset after a hit of Meth… Just a perpetual bludgeoning here: battering and bruising you into submission.

Aged like a Vintage and ripe with as much bold, complex flavor. What’s always been special about this band has been their uncanny ability to turn something so complex into something so primitive and vise versa. Even the melodic parts, like the final couple of minutes of “Keys of Hell and of Death”, and even the savory parts are steeped in this brutal kind of darkness that feels inescapable and yet you wouldn’t turn away now if someone offered you a blowjob… Following some old-school Obituary vibes in riffing/solo during “Reaper of Christianity”, you’ll take in the closer, “Obsidian Reflection of Anti-Light”, in all of its essence of Archgoat perfection. 5:15 worth of why we continue to listen to this band after so many years: wicked energy that has never faded, staunch devotion to their stylistic mechanisms and the feeling that you’re actually listening to some seriously Satanic Black Metal.

I will say that “Nightbringer, Lightbringer” is Archgoat’s most nuanced creation. A few risks were taken that worked out nicely but mainly, this record is a testament to the greatness and to the timeless nature of Classicism, of true Death Metal-powered BM. The dawn of the Goat is nigh! It’s either repent or dive even deeper into the most unforgivable realms of the genre with Archgoat – always and until their end, exactly what Black Metal needs.
