Nihilvm is a Polish Black/Death Metal act that first made their appearance with their 2022 EP, “ Life – Death – Empty,” and have been officially active since 2020. Released earlier this year, “Ancient Cosmic Emanation” is their debut album through Malignant Voices, which actually landed them a contract with Terratur Possessions, with the label announcing that they will be the last band that they will ever sign. Coming from a label with such a prestigious roster, it speaks volumes about their talent and the value of this album.

The album starts with “Arcy triumf śmierci” to set the tone through its technicality and otherworldly guitar layering. The tempo changes keep it from being monotonous, with the middle section slowing down to a ritualistic kind of atmosphere before accelerating again to its rhythm section relentlessness. “Transcendencja” offers a feeling of total collapse through a cold and focused structuring. Tight drumming with intertwining hypnotic guitars creates a void that consumes everything. “Srebrzyste ostrza gwiazd” emphasizes atmosphere instead of speed, following a slowed-down tempo. With a breathtaking tempo, swift from numbness back to an explosive barrage of riffs, giving a new dimension of intensity. “Reticulum” has an underlying groove to it, with the band reaching for a more rhythmic feel instead of just complete chaos.

Moving on, “Wejście” offers a short ambient interlude as an eerie passage to the second half of the album. “Zjadacze światów” brings forth a threatening atmosphere with dense riffing and a layered display of vocals to further enhance its feeling. “Nihilizm ostateczny (zawiła droga ku boskości)” is a vocal-dominated track, taking full advantage of the slower doomy passages. “Koniuracja” is the album’s closing track and a testament to everything the band stands for. It holds together like a cycle of life and death, captioning all of the melodic aspects of the album as well as the ferocious and oppressive atmosphere.

“Ancient Cosmic Emanation” should be taken as a whole journey with a metaphysical approach. Each track makes room for the next, feeding their structures and moods toward a structured outcome. The production of the album strengthens the whole result, having been done by M(of No Solace / Mgła), providing clarity and instrumental balance. From a composition standpoint, Nihilvm are very structured and disciplined, restraining themselves from overloading the track with riffs but instead layering in a way to serve the mood the track needs to serve. However, at the same time at times they may lack intensity, and they could benefit from some more minimal points, as some melodies are buried and forgotten through the thickness of layering.

Nihilvm have just announced themselves as one of the more serious acts to watch out for in the future of the modern Black/Death Metal scene. They have built a strong foundation to build upon their own unique and in comparison with their highly praised live shows, being one of the highlights of this year’s Beyond the Gates, they are bound to be on the frontlines carrying the banners of the black flame.
