The act of restraint is often associated with balance, for it may be shunned to overindulge the senses to achieve a state where one is fully immersed in the essence that entrances the soul. Then there exist the fleeting moments where we crave to submit the soul unto such exhalations, to let that which reaps sorrow, anger and even pain be sown into our very own soil. For when the scales are unbalanced, and when our waters drown our consciousness through the act of surrender, then a mind may achieve a catharsis honest in its journey.
“De Pinte” by Misotheist is an offering within Black Metal, encompassing a ritualistic and raw atmosphere, not just in its sonic transmission but rather in the energy emitted. Through the convergence of the instruments, a worship-like aura emerges in a similar vein to bands such as Whoredom Rife, Celestial Bloodshed and Deathspell Omega. However, Misotheist summons a beast fashioned in esoteric sound, a beast neither tamed nor submissive, but one that seeks to be worshiped in the golden light from whence it is forged, for through the ceremony of song, the mind lays itself and inherits such primordial transmission.

Misotheist
A ritualistic spell permeates through the album where the ceremonial stench transforms its cadence through the strings. Resonating in a dense metallic timbre, the melodies feel livid in their shape, where it becomes its own beast, void of submission, its very carnal presence burning like a fever with its tongue lashing in hunger and delectation. So too does each note feel, as it swells, saunters and crawls, as experienced on the track, “Unanswered Thrice”, where the culmination of the motion coupled with the production gives an entrancing dissonance where the strings exude a burning spirit, as though the beast it represents radiates a sulphuric rancour from its very hide. The intimate sensation from the guitars acts as the sinew which links the mind to this creature of motion, for it is not in its cacophony which casts its glory but rather in its ability to connect with its manifestation, as though outstretched fingers can grasp and delineate the shape of that which is ancient to feel its hooves and its flesh.
Where the guitar becomes the action of the album, in other words, the ebbs and flows, the seductive language through its meandering flow, it is only strengthened through the weight of the percussion. “Kjetterdom” is a testament to this, where each beat feels as though it is trying to signal a spirit beyond this mortal coil, as though the very gravitas of its playing is more a communion than to appear boisterous, furthermore fueling the esoteric moments. But it is not just in the more sombre moments where these elements are expressed but also in its frenetic and incendiary tones, as displayed through “Blinded and Revealed”, where the convulsive behaviour infused with the tectonic pulse feels as though the reverberation is rupturing the very soil it inhabits.
In the same vein as the guitars and the drums, where the guitar becomes the motion and the drums the weight, the vocals in turn transmute blackened language into sound and words, transfiguring themselves into the vociferation which escapes the beast’s gaping jaws, the very gospel twisted into ancient magick. “Unanswered Thrice” is an attestation, where the beginning of the track exhales a raw and unhinged resonance to the vocals, as though the very sound tears and rips the larynx, where the blood lines the lips and bile stains the teeth through speech. This becomes the very offering of flesh and words that heralds famine, pestilence, war and death.
The zenith of the album converges in the track, ”De Pinte”, a duration of 21 minutes, the song itself could be its own separate offering, however within the album, it acts as the crescendo of the album, erupting in ecstacy, as the spirit which was created tears itself apart from the inside. For it is within this track that the mind sees the inner workings of this beast, we eat upon its flesh, where the drums, strings, vocals, binded together like muscle, flesh and tissue, are stripped away in fine miniscule pieces, where the senses trace its essence and tastes its rancour.
A soul may seek solace within the boundaries of itself, but it is within the stomach of this beast that it may seek to converse with the storm that ravages it. Misotheist becomes the very element whose speech feeds the mind, naught to control nor quell the tempest, but to ensnare the consciousness within its chaos; for what is achieved is not catharsis through deliverance, but catharsis through offering oneself unto the jaws that seek to relinquish the soul from this flesh-bound prison.
