The act of surrender may often be frowned upon for submission of the soul may be interpreted as weak, but if the mind were to bare itself upon a construct that transcends this mortal plane, the chalice now becomes overflown in splendor. For when art and consciousness copulate, we allow ourselves to become its receiver, for its message to shape the clay that is our thoughts, through the kneading and sculpting of an experience forged in beauty and pain is bred.
“Liturgy of Death” by Mayhem becomes the river which bleeds the atrament of the ceremonial shades of Black Metal, and in its course shapes the soul which submits itself to the currents of its flow. Exhibiting an esoteric aura, Mayhem constructs a spell that bewitches the very being, where sound becomes the altar unto which the spirit is placed.

Mayhem
A scent that entices the soul can cause the body to convulse, to froth from the mouth, as if what is experienced cannot be contained in flesh. The musical construct of the album can be likened to that scent, that stench which ensnares one’s senses. Spiralling and undulating in its motions, the drums and guitars undergo in their shapes, coupled with the pristine production, which magnified the depths of these sigils etched in sound. “Aeon’s End” and “Propitious Death” exhibit the aforementioned, as the temperature of its motion varies from crawling to frenzied, but the dichotomy of these elements is what graces the magick of this masterpiece. The beauty of the instrumental spirit comes forth in its way to portray a varied tonal sensation, the very metallic yet ritualistic chords evoked from the guitars fused with the war-like resonance of the percussion crafts a dissonance which feels almost worship-like in its atmosphere. It is this same atmosphere that fills the nostrils, causing another to inherit words of a different tongue as teeth gnash in overstimulation and ecstasy.
Through every voyage, there is one who guides the body, dictating the motion and in turn carving the path to which a zenith is discovered. Regarding the album, this takes the shape of the vocals, exhibiting a rather prophetic tongue in its expulsion. “Weep for Nothing” and “The Sentence of Absolution” are tracks that cloak the aura of these musical elements in a mystic yet ceremonial candor, for the variations of the register used evoke a tenebrous feeling. The manner in which the words coil and lash exudes the image of one whose fingers trace and caresses the verses of a grimoire while the tongue curls in delight to each word, its meaning, and the power it holds, so to inturn does the vocals delivery emit in every enunciation. An aspect that becomes a merit is that the very tonal transmission of the vocals never comes across as hollow in order to accentuate the atmosphere, instead the viscosity of its orison exhales a natural sensation, as though a mixture of spit, bile and contempt is vomited through every sermon. It is this same sermon that guides the soul that embarks on this labyrinth of a journey, where the litany becomes the map wherein the mind follows and heeds.
The crux of “Liturgy of Death” can be found in its atmosphere, for even when its body is dissected and each part of its flesh is relished, the main nucleus of its creation is unveiled within its spirit, the very energy which becomes the sinew, stitching together every element. Meditative becomes the action experienced through consuming this ritualistic dialogue. A dialogue that seeks to usher the consciousness upon a path that is only visible to that which eyes cannot see.
Strip away the cloth of the soul, let that which restricts the mind become severed and from nakedness inhale the sulfuric nature of Mayhem‘s “Liturgy of Death”. Through its hymns, the consciousness sinks deeper into the void’s chasm, and through the unseen, the mind awakens in sight and wisdom. For the essence of sound is no longer felt, instead a ceremonial procession betwixt the stygian flame and camphor of the soul weaves a dialogue only to be discerned when these paths are traversed.
