For the battle-hardened one, the soldier, the war never ends. Terrains may vary, but it’s in blood-soaked camo where redemption lies. It’s in that last round, the one that counts, where one truly loses and finds his self. The heat of the moment, the kill shot, the roar of artillery fire and the blaze of fresh napalm to remind you of what you are, what you’ve become…
What of the aftermath? The collateral damage. The death toll rises like a fever as the moments pass. What of that blissful battlefield silence after the scourge? Acrid, blood-soaked and yet as peaceful as a glistening morning meadow.
For Sweden’s Lömsk, their embattlement has taken form in the shape of one EP, “Act I” – a WW1-based conceptualization brought to life by true veterans of the craft whose abilities far outstretch those of their fellows, it seems. On March 6, Lömsk will release their debut LP, “Act II – Of Iron and Blood” via Vendetta Records, much to the satisfaction of those of us who’ve been waiting so anxiously.

Lömsk
Vendetta Records is a successful business venture because of acquisitions like Lömsk. “Act I” was just enough for them to make a formidable impact and gain some well-deserved momentum. And as the red alerts begin to dim, as the dogs of war begin to whimper in the frigid expanse, just corpses. The carrion of all your transgressions, every one of your sins and every shortcoming lies before you in such a way as to haunt you in your life’s journey for the remainder of your years. “Fields of Elysium” and the title-track – a little Mgła worship never hurt anyone… Plenty here to soak up, as I find myself in awe of similar melodic passages, the same style of despising vocals and the atmosphere is saturated with the dank fog of perdition’s mire.
There’s suspense like what’s experienced during the entirety of the tremolo-dominated “Furia” and Plenty of drama a la the epic closing track, “The Silence Thereafter” to take in. Striking melodies, dreadful ones too! Melancholy one moment and brutal the next, but always classy, just like their label. Class cannot be taught; it can only be emulated by those who do not possess it. Needless to say, the copycats are lining up. Lömsk makes it seem so easy, like “why didn’t I think of that?” The Pet Rock, sliced bread, so simple and yet so brilliant all the same.
Carach Angren meets Mgła? That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Take a listen and you will agree. It is nothing like “Panzer Division Marduk” and that the brilliance of it. “Act II” isn’t some edge lord’s wet dream; it is the voice from battlefields past calling you back even now as the smoke has cleared and every poor bastard has been buried. Heed the call! The war-themed BM album has become something of a lost art. Lömsk will bring it back to its former glory one Act at a time.
