Another gem coming out of the US Black Metal scene, Lamp of Murmuur were able to create a buzz around their name since their first demos in 2019. With their improvising way of writing, they managed to assemble quite a following to their Raw Black Metal sound Their latest release »Saturnian Bloodsform» ” is a great result of experimentation kept together with a balanced structure. Distorted riffs and atmospheric harmonies intervene together, while the astonishing lead guitar playing took everyone by surprise. Immortal influences are evident, utilised exceptionally and backed up by outstanding lyrical concepts.

«Conqueror Beyond the Frenzied Fog» is the first sign that this album is moving in a cleaner direction. While maintaining the ferociousness and edge of his riffs, the production is quite a step up and the bass lines are more audible. In «Hymns of Death, Rays of Might» guitars are tuned down, making the track deviate quite a lot from the opening one. Such is the case also with «Seal of The Dominator». Being my favourite with a notable twirl in the clean section and slower groovy riffs, that would be uncharacteristic of the band’s identity.
«In Communion with the Withermoon» gives off strong old Immortal vibes, while the title track comes in a tuned-up tone to make yet again their sound differ greatly from start to finish. Overall the whole album is a remarkable display of S0econd Wave Black Metal, mixed in with experimentation but not wasting any time at all. The band rediscovers themselves, stepping out of their comfort zone and adding things that we have not seen before in their sound. Monotony is something that can’t be found, as the usage of different tones from track to track keeps you guessing about what you might hear next.
«Saturnian Bloodstom» was one of the most anticipated releases of 2023 and it certainly was worth the waiting. Even though the Immortal sound is not of my liking, this album is highly recommended for everyone with an open mind!
