If there ever existed a sound wherein its very being would deconsecrate a pious citadel, the very sound that would take shape of every blasphemous image, I believe it would be that of Aegrus “The Carnal Temples“, for it possesses a mysticism to its candor as the very breathe exuded forth by its notes is enough to drape a valley of bones with flesh and fill every chalice that toasts to a covenant spilling with writhing worms. The beauty of this album’s anatomy exists in its otherworldly feeling, as it ushers you to its altar where one’s senses become attuned to its ceremonial hymns, and in my opinion, this becomes one of the key meritorious moments upon “The Carnal Temples“, for it is as though the listener becomes the disciple to receive this anointment fashioned from a myriad of discordant notes.
“The Carnal Temples” manifests an energy that feels unbridled yet mystical at its core and this is courtesy of the guitars which dispel a plethora of melodies in a serpentine motion. Songs such as “In Death Rapture” and “Moonlit Coffinspirit“ exudes a cimmerian tone from their expulsion, as the air that is released from these necromantic rhythms paint a serpentine illusion capable of entrancing one in its attramental aura, and to me, this is where the earnestly lies within the album, for its ability to carve out an obsidian sky is also mellifluous where this ceremonial procession is concerned. However, it should be mentioned that it is the production employed by the “The Carnal Temples” that graces the album with this esoteric feature, for it renders forth the quality where the sounds feel as though they take dwelling in a sepulcher, reverberating off its walls as they encapsulate the listener it’s torrential assault.
Throughout this review, you the reader may notice that I’ve highlighted the presence of the album’s atmosphere, wheresoever it may exist, be it from the conjuration churned by the instruments or the production which erects its monolithic aura. But it is not just the existence of this spirit which injects such grandiose to “The Carnal Temples“ but it is the motion for which it adopts as though it is a living entity, for it is like drawing blood and emotions from a portrait, where to the one who drinks it’s details feels it’s essence, as though you are connected to it’s veins. Another monumental piece that is gifted comes in the form of the vocals, such as in the track “Flesh and Blood“ where the invocation of these verses conjure a malefic tone that interlaces seamlessly into the guitars and percussive elements.
“The Carnal Temples“ represents a labyrinth of ritualistic depth to its architecture, captivating its listener through its layers as you discern its ever-changing shape, for it is like gazing upon a moon that casts its glow on the rippling waters, creating a splendor to be absorbed in its liquid motions. Such is the same sentiment where the album is concerned, and it is because of this potent ambience that is fostered is why I would say this is an excellent release.
